The elaboration of the decisions of the most recent Consultation Committee caused some inconsistencies. For example, a sports training can continue indoors, but a theater rehearsal cannot. Rehearsals of choirs, music groups or associations are considered to be organized activities such as private gatherings. An ‘open’ rehearsal is an ‘event’ and is allowed. This caused protest in the sector.

In a letter to Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open Vld) and Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden (CD&V), Flemish Culture Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) and his French-speaking and German-speaking colleagues Bénédicte Linard (Ecolo) and Isabelle Weykmans (PFF) now for an adjustment. They believe that all cultural activities should be excluded from the concept of ‘private gatherings’. It should also be clarified that socio-cultural activities do not fall under this heading.

“You don’t get it explained that rehearsals are not allowed to take place, but when they do that in front of an audience and therefore allow more people, it is,” said Minister Jambon’s cabinet. “We have already raised this problem during the consultation committee and also afterwards when drawing up the Royal Decree. Rehearsals and activities of associations can continue perfectly safely according to the protocols that we have already applied sufficiently throughout the pandemic.”

FAQ

The De Croo cabinet says in a response that the decisions of the Consultation Committee were taken in consensus, also with the community governments. “They will be evaluated at the December Consultation Committee.”

Jambon disagrees. “We ask that these activities, just like the youth activities, be allowed back. This clarification can only be made by amending the Royal Decree or amending the FAQ. Organized activities are not mentioned in the KB, so we could just as well say that no rules apply”.
