To slow the spread of the virus, but at the same time support retail and hospitality, the city had previously allowed shops, restaurants, bars and cafes to spread to streets, squares and sidewalks. The programs are considered successes – especially in restaurants – and should remain.
New York had become the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States last spring. In the meantime, the number of new infections in New York has stabilized to some extent. Many cultural institutions in New York – like the theaters on Broadway or the Metropolitan Opera – have closed for almost a year. Governor Andrew Cuomo had already announced an aid program for the cultural institutions in New York state.
