Press release from the Conference of Bishops of France of April 26, 2022:

Monsignor Laurent Ulrich appointed Archbishop of Paris

Episcopal motto: “the joy of believing”

Pope Francis appointed this Tuesday, April 26, 2022 Monsignor Laurent Ulrich Archbishop of Paris.

Monsignor Laurent Ulrich was until now Archbishop of Lille.

Monsignor Georges Pontier, appointed apostolic administrator of the diocese of Paris on December 2, 2021, will continue his mission until the installation of Monsignor Laurent Ulrich.

Monsignor Laurent Ulrich was born in Dijon on September 7, 1951. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Dijon on December 2, 1979. He holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy and a Master’s degree in Theology on the theme “announcement of the faith in the modern world”. Appointed episcopal vicar then vicar general of the diocese of Dijon, Monsignor Laurent Ulrich was appointed archbishop of Chambéry, bishop of Maurienne and Tarentaise on June 6, 2000, and ordained bishop on September 10, 2000. He was transferred to the see of Lille on June 1, 2000. February 2008, received his ministry on March 18, 2008 and was installed Archbishop of Lille on March 30, 2008 in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Treille.

He is currently President of the Council for Catholic Education of the Conference of Bishops of France and Chancellor of the Catholic University of Lille.

Monsignor Laurent Ulrich was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor on May 12, 2017.

To the people of Lille, Monsignor Laurent Ulrich sends the following message: “I liked the magnificent events lived together: the “centenary years of the diocese” which gave it, I believe, more cohesion, particularly around the cathedral as the mother church, with feasts and confirmations; thematic pastoral visits of catechesis, that of working-class neighborhoods with the fine gathering “Osons la Fraternité” at the Maison Paul VI, and that of the parish animation teams; the provincial council lived with the dioceses of Arras and Cambrai which opened, in the midst of the general feeling of the reduction of our forces and our influence in society, new perspectives.

The new Archbishop of Paris confides his joy at being sent to serve the Church which is in Paris: “And it is already like friends that I am addressing you, because the call I received from the Church to come to Paris to exercise my ministry there, comes from Christ himself who always presents himself as the friend of all, at all times and in all places. I come to you with “the joy of believing” which has been my motto for a long time. »

Father Ulrich, in the presence of Bishop Coloni and Pope John Paul II (DR)
