Cucumber sovereigns set a good example

Biblis.Delicious cucumbers and cucumber sovereigns ensured a good mood and role model function when donating blood to the German Red Cross (DRK) Biblis. “We want to set a good example and show young people in particular: Donate blood and save lives”, said Biblis cucumber queen Noemi I, who donated blood for the first time. Her Princess Kyra was there too, for her it was the second time. All donors also received a can of cucumbers as a thank you from the DRK Biblis.

“I’m a bit excited,” revealed Noemi I. before the donation. The two cucumber sovereigns would like to use their office as ambassador of Biblis for this “good cause” and to draw attention to the importance of blood donations. Especially during the corona pandemic, because the regular patient supply with blood preparations must continue to be ensured. “We want to be role models and hope we can motivate more people to make donations too,” said Kyra.

For the first blood donation this year in Biblis, 112 volunteers came by, including seven first-time donors such as Noemie I. The blood donation again took place in the Riedhalle, as the space and distance are optimal here. “In addition, donors have to register for an appointment in advance,” explained Silke Wetzel from the DRK Biblis team. Most of them use online registration for this.

On site, the donors went to the already known stations: in advance temperature measurement, registration, questionnaire on medical history, laboratory, temperature measurement again, blood pressure measurement and measurement of the iron value in the blood. This was followed by the consultation with the doctor, the blood sample and the rest area. The cucumber sovereigns could also confirm that the blood donation is very safe.

Since the corona pandemic, the staff of the DRK Biblis, in cooperation with the team of the blood donation service, have taken other strict protective measures in addition to the regular hygiene standards. This includes measuring the temperature at the entrance to the Riedhalle, FFP2 masks are handed out to all participants and repeated hand disinfection is part of the process. Furthermore, people with cold symptoms are generally not admitted or allowed to donate blood.

For Noemi I. and Kyra, the blood donation had been an “official” appointment for a long time, so they came by with a sash, tiara and scepter. In 2019 they were crowned cucumber sovereignty for one year at the cucumber festival, as this did not take place in 2020 due to corona, both agreed to remain in office. There would be no appointments, unfortunately, due to the pandemic, they could not get involved in the locality as they would like to. “We are in contact with other highnesses,” they reported. Some resigned from office, but the majority stayed, like them. “We also had a cucumber king on site today,” said Silke Wetzel with a smile. One of the donors had revealed that he had been named cucumber king at his bachelorette party. With so many gherkin sovereignties, the thank you gift from the DRK to all participants fits well. “We always give away regional products, this time we also happened to have Bibliser gherkins from the Hundeck pickle”, said Wetzel. str
