## BER Airport Completes CT Scanner‌ Installation, Speeds Up Security Checks

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has completed the installation of advanced CT scanners across all security lanes in ⁢Terminal 1, significantly reducing passenger wait times. The final‌ four lanes in Control Area 1 of Terminal 1 became operational on August‍ 27, 2025, ahead of ⁢the original‍ autumn‍ schedule, ⁤according to the airport. This follows the full implementation of CT scanners in Terminal 2, and the northern and southern pavilions of Terminal 1’s Control Areas 5 and 1 respectively.

The ⁣new scanners, supplied by Smiths Detection, eliminate the need for passengers to remove electronic devices and liquids from their carry-on luggage.

“I am very pleased that we were able to complete the entire renovation‍ of the security lines in the northern area of Terminal 1 ahead of schedule,” stated Aletta von Massenbach, CEO of flughafen Berlin Brandenburg. “The past few weeks of the‍ holidays have‍ shown⁢ that the investment and effort involved in the renovation have been worthwhile. The vast majority of ⁣travelers were able to pass through security controls with waiting times of less than 10 minutes, and thus enjoy a stress-free start to their holidays. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to⁣ my FBB colleagues and all involved partners for⁢ their commitment.”

Control Area 5 in the South Pavilion was ‌updated in April ‌2024, while all eight lanes in Terminal 2 have been operational with the new technology since the beginning of 2024. Control area‌ 1 ‌in the North Pavilion began its phased rollout in May 2025, with the first four lanes opening at the start of the summer holidays. Approximately three-quarters of ‌BER passengers are now benefiting from ⁣the faster security processing.

While the new CT‌ scanners *are* technically capable of screening larger quantities of liquids, the airport currently advises passengers ‌to continue adhering to existing liquid restrictions – containers no larger than 100ml, carried in a transparent,⁣ resealable bag with a⁢ maximum ‍total volume of 1L – as some lanes are still awaiting a software update.

Standard X-ray machines remain in use at 18 security controls in ⁣the central‍ area of Terminal 1. BER is also preparing for renovations to the main hall.
