Crystal Dynamics’ new Perfect Dark will not be affected by the purchase of Embracer

Embracer Group has announced the purchase of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal, three of Square Enix’s western studios, along with their best-known licensees: Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain and many others. Crystal Dynamics is working on a new Tomb Raider in Unreal Engine 5 and had agreed the new Perfect Dark for Microsoft, which will not be affected by the change of hands.

Microsoft and The Initiative announced in September that they would collaborate with the creators of Marvel’s Avengers to create the new Perfect Dark, which has been in preparation for some years. The Initiative has posted a message on Twitter wishing the studio well with the new owner while confirming that the relationship will continue after the progress made in Perfect Dark.

“We’re partnering with Crystal Dynamics, the world-class team behind character-based games like Tomb Raider, to bring this first-person spy thriller to a new generation,” The Initiative said a few months ago. “The teams couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work together. We are still in the early stages of development, but we are incredibly excited to take advantage of this unique opportunity to fulfill the vision of Perfect Dark“.

No names have been given but it seems that Deus Ex and Thief have a better chance of returning than ever after the good received -at least by the players and the critics- Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
