Cruise ship hit by deadly wave: one dead, others injured

Norwegian cruise company Viking said a cruise ship hit a deadly wave off the coast of Argentina, killing a tourist and causing injuries.

A 62-year-old American woman died and four passengers were injured when a deadly wave hit the Viking cruise ship Polaris, which left the southern Argentine port of Ushuaia en route to Antarctica, according to the publication, citing the Argentine news agency Telam. The woman’s immediate cause of death was an injury from broken glass.

According to the US National Oceanic Service, killer waves, or rogue waves, are huge masses of ocean water 20-30 meters high, which form rarely and spontaneously. Such a wave creates abnormal pressure on the ship and can lead to its destruction.

“In this case, the damaged vessel returned to Argentina, where an investigation into the incident began immediately. Injuries to other passengers are not life-threatening,” the report said.

Viking Polaris, luxury cruise ship built in 2022, has capacity for 378 passengers and 256 crew members.

Earlier this year, RBC-Ukraine reported that a record temperature of 12.7 degrees Celsius was recorded at the Ukrainian “Akademik Vernadsky” station in Antarctica. This is 1 degree higher than the 1985 record level.

Recall that in December last year another record was set at the Akademik Vernadsky station – the snow depth reached 3 m.
