Crucial day in the abuse process? Expert has the floor

The trial of the 38-year-old Würzburg speech therapist before the regional court is at a crucial point this Wednesday. The verdict could be reached in early May.

Despite the Corona crisis, the trial for the abuse of seven disabled boys at the regional court in Würzburg has reached a crucial point: the judge, the victim and the defense are looking forward to the trial on Wednesday. The renowned psychiatrist Norbert Nedopil then takes the floor in court. Once again, one of the most notable court appraisers could set the course for how a crime will be judged and what the punishment will be.

Influenced in numerous processes

Norbert Nedopil previously headed the forensics department at the University of Würzburg. His word carries weight when it comes to what was going on in a suspect’s head. His reports caused a sensation about the murderous “mask man” Martin Ney, the wrongly imprisoned Gustl Mollath or the right-wing terrorist Beate Zschäpe.

Now Nedopil is supposed to help the regional court in Würzburg to assess the accused Würzburg speech therapist. The 38-year-old confessed to having abused and filmed seven disabled boys until they were raped – during the therapy, which according to the defense should also have benefited the abused children. The lawyers’ strategy had recently led to violent conflicts in court because a defense lawyer was uninhibitedly seeking advocates for his client among the former childcare providers.

Judgment in May?

Two questions remain exciting for everyone involved in the trial and the victims: Is the accused fully guilty? And does expert Nedopil – to whom the speech therapist is said to have confided in hours of talks – see the 38-year-old as so dangerous that he has to remain in prison after serving a long prison term because otherwise he remains a danger to little boys?

Depending on what the expert said on Wednesday, the pleadings could start on Thursday – and a judgment in May would be within reach.
