Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) researcher Amir Hamidi explained that the viral crocodile is of various types estuary crocodile or Crocodylus porosus.

Human crocodile conflict

Amir said that crocodile-human conflicts often occur in Indonesia. Conflict can be triggered by many things.

“Humans can enter the crocodile’s territory or vice versa. Because the crocodile is getting bigger, the territory is getting bigger,” said Amir.

He said there are frequent conflicts in Africa too, but they use nets for safety.

The net is used as a barrier with crocodile territory. So that people can still wash, bathe, or do other things in the river / water.

However, in Indonesia it is constrained because fishermen who look for fish cannot be limited by nets. So like it or not, fishermen enter crocodile territory or vice versa.

“What needs to be seen is that all types of crocodiles have been protected in Indonesia, so if there is a conflict, what kind of mechanism has been regulated in the law,” he said.

According to him, if the crocodile had harmed or killed a victim, a study was needed to determine the next step.

This measure can be limited in population, relocation, and so on. But to take action, according to him, a scientific study is needed first.
