Criticized about the National Security Act, China: Not Your Affairs

BEIJING, KOMPAS.com – The Chinese government on Wednesday (1/7/2020) denied international criticism about the National Security Law which is considered controversial for Hong Kong.

Reported by the French media AFP, the Chinese government said that other countries should not have to speak up alias shut up.

Western governments and critics warn that the law will curb Hong Kong’s freedom and undermine the “1 nation, 2 system” policy which protects freedom that does not exist in mainland China.

However, Beijing officials rejected criticism regarding the National Security Act for Hong Kong at their Press Conference.

“What does that have to do with you?” said Zhang Xiaoming, Office for Hong Kong and Macau Affairs. “It’s none of your business.”

Chinese officials insist that they have passed a series of consultations with members in the Hong Kong community. They also answered the allegations of damaging Hong Kong’s autonomous status.

“If what we want is a 1 country 1 system, it is very easy,” Zhang said. “We can fully treat criminal law, criminal procedures and the National Security Law and other National Laws to Hong Kong.”

He added, “Why should we bother formulating the National Security Law for Hong Kong?”

Zhang also insisted that the law he said could not be applied retrospectively, was the only one to target a handful of people and “not the entire opposition camp”.

“The purpose of making the Hong Kong National Security Act certainly is not to target the Hong Kong opposition, the pro-democracy camp, as enemies,” he said.

But, as a policy of 1 State, 2 Systems, shows the political tolerance of the Chinese government.

His statement came a day after the Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Demosisto Party announced its dissolution, following the passage of the National Security Act.

Zhang also attacked sanctions from other nations. “At the moment some countries say they will impose some sanctions on Chinese officials, I think that is the logic of the bandits.”
