Criticism of the autumn fair – “wrong signal”

Frankfurt is a corona hotspot and introduced stricter rules in the fight against the pandemic. At the same time, the city opened the autumn fair. The decision has been criticized on social media.

“Autumn in the city” has been in Frankfurt since Friday: The traditional autumn fair celebrated its opening – despite the increasing number of corona infections. The stands and attractions are open to visitors from Monday to Saturday between 12 p.m. and 9 p.m. The festival is spread over several locations in the city center. It remains to be seen whether the autumn fair will succeed in bringing a festival atmosphere to the city.

In any case, there is a lot of criticism of the festival on social media. Users accuse politics of inconsistencies. “One should forego private parties, but the city is allowed to organize a party,” wrote a user on Twitter. “In the current situation, a cancellation would be the only correct measure,” wrote another. “Even if the showmen lose important income as a result.”

The autumn fair should have opened a day earlier, but the hygiene concept was revised again. “I want parents to have a good feeling when they stroll through the market with their children or let them take a round on the carousel,” said Mayor Peter Feldmann before the opening. Nonetheless, some take a critical view of this: “Despite a refined hygiene concept, this is definitely the wrong signal!”, Notes a Twitter user.

Big cities are developing into risk areas

The number of infections is increasing in many German cities. Most recently, Berlin, Bremen and Frankfurt had registered more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days. In Frankfurt this incidence value was 55.9 on Friday. Just across the city limits, in the neighboring city of Offenbach, the threshold value, which is important for the development of the pandemic, was even 65.8.
