Several Southeast Asian countries managed to keep the infection pressure down while covid-19 ravaged Europe last year. The virus has now gained a foothold in several places.

I Thailand There are reports of constantly new records in the number of infected and dead. In the last 24 hours, 4887 cases of infection have been registered – 2835 of them among inmates in prisons, reports Bangkok Post.

The hope of a soon reopening for tourists therefore hangs in the balance, according to Reuters.

Reopening for tourists may be delayed

Thailand’s tourism industry has a broken back after just over a year of pandemics, and the authorities have been preparing to receive vaccinated tourists on Phuket from 1 July to improve the country’s economy.

The island’s mayor, Narong Woonciew, warned on Wednesday that the planned reopening could be postponed if the infection pressure persists.

– If the number of daily infections does not fall, the plan may be postponed. Let’s work together to reduce infection rates as low as possible, Woonciew said Bangkok Post.

So far, only two percent of the country’s residents have received at least one vaccine dose.

Harvested praise – then it turned around

In Vietnam, the authorities have long praised the handling. Through targeted mass testing and strict quarantine rules, the country has managed to put an end to outbreaks quickly.

In recent weeks, the situation has changed.

The new eruption started in April, and has spread rapidly to several regions – including the capital Hanoi.

In total, Vietnam has according to Reuters registered in excess of 3600 cases of infection since the start of the pandemic. In recent days, up to 100 infected people have been reported per day. Less than one percent of the country’s inhabitants have started vaccination.

Around 70,000 people are to be quarantined, according to South China Morning Post.

The Vietnamese will hold elections on May 23. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh believes the eruption threatens political stability.

– The risk of this spreading throughout the country is very high. We have to take strict measures to quell the outbreak, stated Chinh Sunday, after the first day with over 100 registered cases of infection.

Several countries are struggling

The coronavirus is also ravaging other countries in Southeast Asia. Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia are among the countries that have experienced an increasing infection trend in recent times.

According to NTB, seven of the ten countries in the world that now have the highest infection pressure are in Asia.

The development coincides in time with the dramatic wave of infections in India, which has been particularly hard hit this spring. A record 4,205 corona-related deaths were recorded in India on Wednesday.

A total of 23.3 million infected and 250,000 deaths have been registered in the country since the start of the pandemic. The real numbers are assumed to be five to ten times higher.
