## Ronaldo‘s World Cup Send-Off in Jeopardy: Suspension Threatens to Limit Playing Time
Cristiano Ronaldo’s final world Cup appearance could be drastically curtailed before it even begins. Following a red card received during Portugal‘s match against Ireland – the first dismissal in his 226 international caps - Ronaldo faces a potential suspension that could sideline him for the majority of the group stage at the 2026 tournament.
The initial suspension for the decisive qualifier against Armenia is automatic. however, FIFA‘s disciplinary code allows for a minimum two-match ban for ”serious misconduct” and three for “assault,” potentially ruling Ronaldo out of multiple crucial games. Shoudl Portugal qualify as expected, this could mean Ronaldo begins the World Cup from the stands, with a risk of playing onyl a single match if the team fails to advance from their group. This scenario casts a shadow over what was intended to be a celebratory farewell to international football for the legendary striker.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has vowed to contest any extension of the ban, stating, “Cristiano has never been sent off in 226 matches. It’s a bit hard. He spent almost an hour being pulled and pushed. He tries to free himself, the defender falls theatrically.” The incident has also reignited tensions with Ireland, with coach Heimir Hallgrimsson claiming Ronaldo confronted him after the match, congratulating him for pressuring the referee. Hallgrimsson added, “It’s his gesture that costs him the red, not me.”
An increased suspension would also jeopardize Ronaldo’s participation in potential play-off matches in March, further threatening his prospect to feature prominently in his final World Cup.
