Even before the fire attack on Thursday, those responsible assumed that the replacement daycare center could be moved into in the coming days. But now the passage of time is completely different.
On Monday, a company commissioned by the insurance company of the Red Cross District Association of Herford-Land looked at the burned-out container facility. “They checked whether at least some of the containers could still be used. It may be that all modules have to go, ”explains DRK district association chief Wolfgang Koch.
Two thirds were not directly affected by the fire or the enormous heat exposure. However, for example, the smoke from the fire moved through the entire daycare center. In addition: some furnishings had already been stored in the container modules. The company should clarify whether the furniture can still be saved or whether it has to be disposed of.
Furthermore, the entire daycare area remains confiscated by the police. According to Koch, the officials will come back on Wednesday to continue their investigations into the cause. “For us it is certain that it is deliberate arson. However, it has not yet been determined which fire agents were used. The colleagues now want to clarify that, ”says district police spokeswoman Simon Lah-Schnier.
Only when the insurance company and the police release the area can the dismantling of the containers begin. “The containers also have to be gutted on site before they are transported away.” And there is another problem: the company Algeco cannot currently provide the 2.5-meter modules installed so far. “So we have to switch to containers three meters wide. The system must therefore be rebuilt in a different form, ”says Koch.
He hopes that the DRK will not have to apply for a new building permit from the building authorities. In addition, the DRK has to call in the town hall for an extension of the special use of some British houses in which the 125 Krempoli children have been cared for since the facility’s first fire last October. The deadline is March 15th. “However, Algeco cannot start rebuilding until April 6th at the earliest. And so the system cannot be handed over before April 15th. And after all, we still have to set up the daycare, ”emphasizes Koch. Mayor Susanne Rutenkröger recently emphasized that she wanted to support the DRK in all matters relating to the reconstruction of the Krempoli day care center.
It remains to be seen to what extent the DRK insurance will compensate for the damage. “We have to see how expensive it all will be. Especially if the insurance only covers part of it. Otherwise that could exceed the capabilities of the DRK district association. After the first fire, we already contributed a six-figure amount from our own resources, ”explains Wolfgang Koch. He expressly praises the willingness to donate. “But we have to raise quite a sum if we want to continue the daycare operations seamlessly.” At the beginning of next week, the board wants to meet and draw up a time and cost plan.
Five to six cameras should come

The topic of security will also be discussed in the DRK district executive committee in a few days. According to Wolfgang Koch, the DRK has requested offers for extensive camera surveillance from two security companies from Bünde and Bielefeld. “We imagine that the entire site is constantly monitored by five to six cameras. Both the new container facility and the complex that burned down in October are to be targeted, ”explains the district association chairman. It is also important that the cameras are switched directly to a control center that has everything that is happening on the site in view. As Koch emphasizes, a camera had already been installed on the container system before the new fire. “But it did not survive the icy temperatures of the onset of winter and broke – a few days before the last arson.”
