Credit cards prevent us from being ourselves, say non-binary people. The name should be optional

Card issuers have decided to declare their support for gender diversity. This year, Mastercard will introduce its True NameTM payment card in Europe, which will allow holders to “use their gender identity”. It supports the so-called trans and non-binary communities. Visa again issued a rainbow card in cooperation with Revolut this year. The extradition fee goes to a charity protecting the rights of LGBT + communities.

According to Mastarcard, many people around the world find that the identity on their card does not match who they feel. In particular, members of transgender and non-binary communities may find the name on the payment card in an awkward situation, as an official change of name entails a lengthy and demanding official process.

The True NameTM card is intended to allow individuals to enjoy shopping with a card that bears their preferred name.

“Our names determine who we are, and many people in the LGBTQ + community have to deal with the fact that their credit cards do not allow them to be themselves. As allies of the LGBTQ + community, we have the opportunity to bring about real and meaningful change to help solve this problem.” said Mark Barnett, President of Mastercard for the European Market.

“Visa’s vision is to create a place where everyone is accepted, which is why it has long supported a diverse and inclusive environment. It also participates in the annual ‘Month of Pride’,” added company spokesman František Teplý.
