Ottawa announced on Saturday the creation of a special task force to tackle significant delays in processing passport applications.
This group, which will also process immigration applications, will also address the labor shortage that is causing delays at Canadian airports.
“The delays in processing passport and immigration applications are unacceptable, and the government is working urgently to eliminate them as quickly as possible,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement this morning.

This group, which will be made up of members of Cabinet, will aim to present short- and long-term solutions to improve the situation of Canadians, the federal government said.
In recent days, Canadians have had to be patient in order to obtain their passports. In Montreal, the tense atmosphere at the Service Canada passport office, located at Complexe Guy-Favreau, made the rounds on social networks.
Hundreds of people were forced to stay put for long hours – even days and nights – in order to obtain the precious identity document to travel. Some citizens were indeed forced to camp in front of the federal building.
Many political figures have expressed their dissatisfaction with the management of this crisis, in particular the mayor of Montreal Valérie Plante and the prime minister François Legault.
The minister Head of Service Canada, Karina Gould, also apologized last Thursday for problems managing passport applications.
