Maciej Żurawski was sitting in a wheelchair. His head and neck ached, but not enough not to turn at the sound of confusion behind him. He saw everyone in the hospital corridor parting and hugging to the walls to make room for another patient in the wheelchair. Wrapped in stripes, in a fastened collar, with drips pinned down and several doctors around.

– He is a boy from us – heard Żurawski from a physiotherapist Pogoń Szczecin, who was taking a helper for an X-ray examination. Today, it seems to him that at that moment, January 10, his heart stopped for a moment.

Bad luck broke off

It was supposed to be the usual winter Friday, the fourth day of training in 2020. Classes are scheduled outside the club, so after the gathering at the stadium Portowiec players divided into groups got into the cars and headed to the meeting place. Oskar Kalenik, Kacper Kozłowski and Marcel Wędrychowski were also in the car driven by Żurawski. They haven’t traveled far. There was an accident at the intersection of Brzozowskiego and Mickiewicza streets.

After a while, the entire team gathered at the scene of the accident, an ambulance quickly appeared and took the victims to the hospital. Each of the four players suffered. Żurawski least – it had a slightly cracked cervical spine and a cut head. Most Kozłowski – with trauma to the spine and pelvis. It was him who parted in the corridor.

– After the examination, I returned to the observation room. The nurse who knew our physiotherapist and was a supporter told us that, fortunately, the worst fears about Kacper have already been ruled out. It was a great relief – says Żurawski. He was released from the hospital immediately, maybe two hours after the tests were completed. After five days at home was the last of the crash participants. None of them went to Turkey to camp.

It is said that a good start is the most important thing, but the 19-year-old knows not necessarily. After all, 2020 began very badly for him, and by June everything had all worked out. He appeared in five matches in a row, of which four in the basic composition. He took the chance, in the clash with Lechia (1: 1) he was assisted and got to the queue eleven. Previously, he played in the Premier League only once and from the bench in the last round of the previous season.

– I hope that bad luck broke off from me – says Żurawski.

And he stayed for a long time, about a year and a half. In July 2018, he was officially included in the team of the first team and it began. One injury, second, third. In theory, they were not serious, but they ruled out training. Bah! There were days when the midfielder had a problem getting out of bed because of back pain, let alone a ball game. He was barely 17, 18 years old … Hernia at vertebral level L3 and L4 – this bad luck plagued Żurawski for the longest time. The ailment subsided, he returned to the pitch, felt good, and then there was stinging again. And again. And again.

– It was the worst. I felt completely helpless. I worked with a physiotherapist for a year to deal with it, and this time was extended as if it lasted 10 years – says Żurawski.

Where do these troubles come from?

– I was told that I was slightly stretched and my hips were not very mobile. There were also many voices that it was my fault. That I miss something, I eat badly, etc. It additionally hindered the survival of this period. Because I took the matter seriously, every time, and now it works the same way, and everything is fine and everyone is happy. I don’t know what the pain was. Lesson of patience. Thank God that everything bad is behind me – he adds.
