Covid: “total cluster” at the Nîmes remand center, the visiting rooms in the sights of the FO union

Since Thursday, November 13, the Nîmes remand center has been officially classified as a “total cluster” by the regional health agency, the positive cases of Covid 19 now multiplying there, among prisoners from different sectors.

“Until now, there was only one chain of contamination within the establishment, since the contaminated prisoners were all located on one and the same corridor. However, this is no longer the case. today !”, warns Sébastien Pages, of the FO Justice union.

Stop entries

According to our information, corridors number 2 and 3 would be the most affected by the return of the virus, while an inmate in solitary confinement and a woman would also have tested positive. “To stop the spread of the pandemic, it is necessary to truly suspend the entries which continue within the establishment. This, despite the total cluster classification decided on Thursday by the authorities!”, denounces Sébastien Pages, who claims to have, again on Friday evening, received a new detainee who has just been imprisoned in Nîmes to carry out his pre-trial detention.

“The leave granted by the sentence enforcement judges during the holidays also harmed us”, continues the prison officer, convinced that the return of the Covid is the fruit of the relations maintained by the prisoners, not with the guards, but with the outside.

Should we not, for a time, suspend visiting rooms in the name of health security?

“Today, the virus is even present in a specific area where prisoners are deprived of all contact with the rest of the prison population… but no visiting rooms”, continues, by way of example, the union representative who then asks the legitimate question: “Shouldn’t we, for a time, suspend the visiting rooms in the name of health security?”
