COVID measures in the Czech Republic What are the current government measures?

Second state of emergency declared on 5 October 2020 continues to apply and since then the government has been gradually tightens up the measures in the fight against coronavirus.

Most measures apply until the end of the emergency, which the cabinet extended on Friday, November 20, after the approval of the Chamber of Deputies, until December 12.

Measures valid from 23 November

Shops will be able from Monday, November 23 operate until 11 pm, during this time a curfew will also apply instead of the current 21 hours. The number of people who will be able to meet will also increase, to six people instead of the current two. In the case of weddings, funerals and services, the number of participants allowed increases from 15 to 20.

– For shopping centers and retail outlets, the rules do not change except for longer opening hours. Only the sale of basic necessities is allowed. Exceptions to the measure are food, drugstores, pharmacies, opticians or florists. It is also possible to operate dispensaries. Measures valid from 18 November

On Tuesday On November 17, the anniversary of the struggle for freedom and democracy, stores exempt from government anti-epidemic measures may remain open from 05:00 to 20:00 on this holiday.

From Wednesday On 18 November, measures in retail will be further tightened. There will be a limit on the number of people per area in the establishments. One person will have to have a space of 15 square meters for himself. The regulation is part of a new anti-pandemic system (PES), which was introduced by the Ministry of Health on Friday. According to the release model, the limit of 15 square meters per person should apply from the third level of readiness. In the first, lightest degree of risk, a maximum of four people will be able to shop on 15 square meters of operating space. In the second stage, the number of customers is reduced to two.

– From Wednesday, the opening hours of the stores will be extended by one hour. It will be united with a curfew. People will be able to shop until 21:00.

Measures valid from 28 October

– Valid until the end of the emergency night curfew. The government has decided that people must stay at home between 21:00 and 04:59. Exceptions apply, inter alia, to journeys to work, occupation, urgent journeys to protect life, health and property, but also to dogs walking within 500 meters of the place of residence.

– The government has also curtailed external markets. From 28 October, only farmers’ markets where only food is sold may take place. Sales from mobile stores remain permitted. At the same time, however, consumption is prohibited in the markets, the stalls should be at least two meters apart and the maximum number of people should be 20 people per 400 square meters. The government also banned sales in markets, mobile establishments and walk-through and door-to-door sales.

– V Sunday and on public holidays, shops must remain closed. Exceptions are petrol stations, pharmacies or shops in places with an increased concentration of passengers, such as airports, railway stations or bus stations. At the same time, the time limit does not apply to health care stores and restaurants that will be able to prepare and pick up meals.

From Monday to Saturday shops can be open from 05:00 until 20:00. The same exceptions apply here as in the previous case.

Measures valid from 22 October

– Restrictions on the free movement of persons and contact with other people. Exceptions are trips to work, to buy food and other important consumer goods, trips to the doctor or to family. Trips to nature or stays in cottages and chalets are allowed, but not more than two people, unless they are members of one household. Exceptions to the ban on the free movement of persons will also be granted to medical school students traveling for study or examination.

– Closure of retail outlets and ban on the sale of services in establishments. Shopping malls remain open. Only grocery stores, drugstores or pharmacies can remain open. Exceptions are also fuel shops, pet stores, opticians, newsagents, laundries or dry cleaners. That services car repair shops, third-party pick-up and drop-off shops, gardening shops, florists, textile and haberdashery shops, computer and telecommunications equipment services, consumer electronics stores, locksmith shops, household product service shops, car washes, home shops may remain open needs and hardware stores, raw material collection and purchase facilities or composting plants.

– Limiting public contact with the state administration to five hours twice a week. At a press conference, Prymula (for YES) specified that no queues should be formed and people should order in advance. “Wherever possible, we are ordering officials to move to a home office system,” the health minister said.

The government has also called on employers to promote work from home, reduce unnecessary work, and limit customer contact.

Measures valid from 19 October

– Until the appeal, the obligation to wear veils outside in the territory of municipalities applies if a person is closer than two meters to another (with the exception of people from one household). They are mandatory veils even in the car, if the person does not ride in it alone or with members of the household.

Measures valid from 14 October

– limiting the gathering of persons to a maximum of six persons, with the exception of employment or family. It is still true that in shops and shopping centers, people can move in a maximum of two

– all schools except kindergartens are switching to distance learning. Until now, distance learning has been valid for universities and high schools. Alternating distance learning was valid at the second stage of primary schools. The practical teaching, which has so far taken place in person, is hereby canceled. Exceptions to the ban on physical presence at the university will be granted to students participating in clinical and practical teaching and practice in the fields of general medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other medical study programs and those who carry out teaching practice in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools.

– Completely enclosed pubs, restaurants and bars. Restaurants can have service windows open between 6 am and 8 pm. Exceptions are establishments that do not serve the public (canteens, catering in hospitals, prisons) and hotel restaurants (only for their guests).

– there is a ban on alcohol consumption in public places.

– the operation of casinos is prohibited.

Measures valid from 13 October

Measures valid from 12 October

“The situation that has arisen these days is so alarming that I was forced to change my strategy for implementing the measures,” said Health Minister Roman Prymula. He also drew attention to the rapid spread of COVID-19 and drew attention to possible congestion in hospitals.

Limitation of leisure activities to fourteen days

The measures will be probably extended until 3 November.

– All indoor sports grounds and zoos, for example, are closed

– gyms, swimming pools and other sports grounds of this type are closed (from Friday 9 October)

– restrictions on traffic in shopping centers – food courses will be open, but only two people can sit there and the public Wi-Fi network must not be switched on

– entry to shops and establishments is limited to groups of a maximum of two people

Restrictions on the opening hours of offices

– the offices will be open two days a week and always only for five hours

People infected with coronavirus will be able to isolate for ten days in hotel-type facilities to reduce the risk of the disease spreading in the family.

Weddings and funerals

From 19 October, a maximum of thirty people were allowed to attend weddings and funerals. But the government immediately changed the decision and from 22 october, only 10 people are allowed to attend weddings and funerals.

Demonstration and gathering is limited to one hundred participants, from Friday 30 October they can only take place outdoors, in groups of a maximum of twenty participants and while maintaining spacing and drapes.

Where to wear a veil

Obligation to wear a veily applies in all indoor areas outside the residence or place of accommodation. The veil must also be worn in all public transport vehicles, intercity buses, trains and taxis. People must also wear a veil at bus and train stops and at public transport stops. Veils must also be worn outside the home if contact with short distances cannot be prevented.
