Croup, the new COVID symptom associated with children
Despite the fact that this month two years have passed since the outbreak of the pandemic in Spain, COVID-19 continues to increase its symptoms. The latter especially affects young children who have been infected with omicron variant or with subvariant BA.2 (stealthy omicron), and it is the croup or laryngotracheobronchitis.
croup is the inflammation of the trachea and larynxcaused by a contagious viral infection that causes tosa loud noise called stridor, and sometimes difficulty breathing during inspiration. Its symptoms consist of fever, runny nose and barking cough.
Most children have only one episode of croup.although there are some who have repeated episodes (referred to as spasmodic croup) that are started by viral infections that gradually decrease in frequency and severity.
As reported Antenna 3according to a informe del Boston Children’s Hospital (United States), a total of 75 children arrived at the hospital emergency room with laryngotracheobronchitis and COVID-19 from March 1, 2020 to January 15, 2022.
Dr. Ryan Brewster, the first author of this report, which has been published in the scientific journal ‘Pediatrics’, has stated that “there was a very clear delimitation from the moment that the omicron became the dominant variant until the moment when we started to see an increase in the number of patients with laryngotracheobronchitis.”
