COVID advances in Europe at the start of the holidays

War in Ukraine, inflationary spiral, personnel crisis, increase in fuel and electricity prices, aviation strikes… These are just some of the adversities that in recent months have left the COVID-19 pandemic in the background, that it is still here, and that given the rise in cases throughout Europe, it once again becomes a major threat just at the start of the holidays.

“Transmission has started to increase in the European Union/European Economic Area in general. In addition, in several countries, case rates among people over 60 years of age are increasing again, along with some indicators of severity,” warns the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

This advance of the virus has been fueled by highly infectious subvariants of the omicron variant, which that causes a new wave of disease to appear as immunity wanes and the summer travel season begins.

Of 28 countries with data on admissions/occupancy in hospitals or ICUs, ten reported an increasing trend in at least one of these indicators compared to the previous week.

The agency has warned thatomicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 will become dominant in the EU, which “will probably lead to an increase in COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks”, something that, if confirmed, could become the umpteenth hurdle for the reactivation of travel this summer. In addition, the increase in infections can aggravate the already pressing personnel crisis in the sector.

One of the problems today, unlike other times of the pandemic, is the lack of data, as confirmed by the agency’s notification map, which nevertheless detects how the virus is advancing in countries such as Portugal, France and Italy in cases diagnosed within 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants.

An advance of the infections that is also verified by the Our World in Data project, which indicates that Portugal leads the rate of infections as of June 22 (1,511 daily cases per million inhabitants), followed by Germany (1,422), France (1,156), Italy (908), while for Spain a day before it counted 1,074.

“Due to limited testing, the number of confirmed cases is lower than the actual number of infections,” warns Our World in Data, while the ECDC also lists countries that do not provide enough data or test poorly.

In Spain, according to the Ministry of Health, which now only offers data on people over 60 years of age, the incidence of infections at 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants already amounts to 755.71one hundred points more than last Tuesday, with a hospital bed occupancy rate of 6.67% and 4.38% in the ICU.

Likewise, after more than two and a half years of the pandemic, people continue to die from the virus in our country: in the last seven days there have been 194 elderly deaths from COVID.
