After the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, announced that together with Mexico and the University of Oxford will begin to manufacture a vaccine to combat covid-19, doubts arose about when it will be available to supply it to the population.
To clarify the above, the regional director for Latin America of del mAbxiencie laboratory, Eduardo Cioppi, talked with Bío Bío Express, where he provided details of the phase in which it is, the production projections and the estimated dates to start marketing them.
“At the beginning of the year when we knew that several research groups were working on the discovery of a solution for the coronavirus problem, the University of Oxford was one of the first to advance very quickly with a very interesting alternative,” he explained.
It is in this context that “the possibility of opening up to the manufacture of the product occurred, knowing that we have 8 billion human beings to attend to.”
“In that sense the Slim Foundation of Mexico started a financing project, in which MAbxiene joined, as the Latin American company that is going to manufacture, through a technology transfer ”.
He clarified that the study of the product is still being carried out in England, “they have finished the initial clinical phase, which is the initial phase, which today has been shown to be safe and now they are doing phase three studies, which is efficacy ”.
Once this stage is finished, the registration with the health authorities would continue and then commercialization begins.
Being aware that there is no time to lose due to the large number of deaths caused by the pandemic, he stated that “what we are doing is starting the entire process of transferring epidemiology beforehand.”
Therefore, to maintain the good results, “They could start vaccinating people early next year or late this year and in 2021 we would be able to start the first batches ”.
They plan to manufacture 250 million doses. We will supply all of Latin America, except for Brazil, which will do so independently.
