They are two women, aged 80 and 73, respectively, who died after being vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine. “They did not die from the vaccine,” says VHP parliamentarian Cheryl Dijksteel, who is a member of the COVID-19 parliamentary committee, to Suriname Herald. The committee was briefed on this issue on Friday by the Minister of Health, Amar Ramadhin.
Dijksteel explains that the first events team will investigate these two cases. This medical team monitors the occurrence of any serious side effects after individuals have been vaccinated. The MP emphasizes that a causal relationship has not yet been established between the deaths of the people and the receiving and having side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine. She expects the result of the investigation to be in this week.
The MP is of the opinion that the death of the two women should not deter others from getting vaccinated. She believes that policymakers should be as transparent as possible on these issues. This is especially necessary because there is still so much noise about the COVID-19 vaccine. Fake news must be prevented. She says it is good that the government immediately announced that two people died after being vaccinated.
The MP asks society to understand the COVID-19 situation. She emphasizes that Suriname is already in the third wave. According to her, Suriname should be prevented from getting hundreds of cases. “Our health sector is exhausted. We are not going to be able to handle many sick people, ”she says. Measures must be taken to minimize contamination.
“People are going to die in the street. We are not going to be able to treat people, ”she adds, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. According to her, Suriname will have scenes of Italy if the government does not intervene. Prevention must be applied, Dijksteel emphasizes.
