COVID -19: unemployment figures are panicking in Morocco

The statistics unveiled by the High Commission for Planning (HCP) give an idea of ​​the devastating effect of the new coronavirus on the Moroccan job market. In a note published this weekend, the institution indicated that the Moroccan economy lost 589,000 jobs during the second quarter of 2020. This poor performance is due to the effect of the spread of the virus, state of health emergency and full containment.

“The volume of employment fell by 589,000 jobs, resulting in a loss of 69,000 in urban areas and 520,000 in rural areas, against an average creation of 64,000 jobs between the second quarters of the three previous years”, specifies the HCP , pointing to a decline in activity and employment rates. If one relies on the statistics of the Moroccan institution, paid employment recorded a loss of 264,000 jobs at the national level, following a loss of 31,000 jobs in urban areas and 233,000 in rural areas.

For its part, unpaid employment experienced a loss of 325,000 jobs, as a result of a loss of 38,000 jobs in urban areas and 287,000 in rural areas. “The working-age population (15 years or older) increased by 1.5%, compared to the second quarter of 2019, against a decline in the labor force of 0.8%.

The activity rate thus fell from 45.8% to 44.8% between the two periods. It increased from 41.8% to 42.2% in urban areas and fell from 53.2% to 49.6% in rural areas, ”says the HCP. The employment rate, for its part, fell from 42.1% to 39.3%, at the national level (-2.8 points), he said, noting that this rate fell by 51 , 6% to 46% in rural areas, from 36.9% to 35.6% in urban areas, from 65.4% to 61.8% among men (-3.6 points) and from 19.5% at 17.5% among women (-2 points).
