Covid-19: Towards a resumption of economic activity?

-

Economic activity is gradually resuming in the region and at the national level, after having undergone a major and unprecedented halt with the confinement of the population, intended to stem the Covid-19 epidemic. In June, activity in Burgundy-Franche-Comté was 12% below normal, a clear improvement compared to the situation in April when it operated at a rate lower than 30%.

Overall, all business sectors benefited from a resumption of activity in June. It is clear in accommodation and catering, where the drop is estimated at 20% compared to 82% in April. The situation is also improving in the industry. However, its activity remains 14% below normal compared to 32% in April. The drop in construction activity also remains marked, despite a marked recovery, 31% in June against 61% in April.

However, the job market is deteriorating. Since the end of March, job destruction has increased, particularly in temporary work, and the number of job seekers has increased. Thus, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté lost nearly 22,600 salaried jobs between the start and the end of the first quarter of 2020, a decline of 2.3%. The partial activity system has been used in all sectors. However, the industry accentuated its continuous decline and lost 1,000 jobs or – 0.6%. Overall, all sectors combined, the Doubs department has lost 5,200 jobs, making it the most affected department in the region.
