8h50 – Drastic loss of income for the most fragile
A quarter of families living on values of up to 650 euros a month lost all income during the pandemic. The conclusion is a survey by the National School of Public Health released this Saturday.
Among those who earn more than 2,500 euros, only 6% lost their income.
The study warns that the economic consequences of Covid-19 and confinement will mainly affect those who were already more fragile in terms of employment and reducing sources of income.
More than half of the Portuguese respondents (52%) say they have not had any loss of income, but in households that had between 650 and 1000 euros available the percentage drops to 44%.

“Preliminary data seems to indicate that Covid-19 infection is markedly unequal, affecting more heavily the municipalities and countries that already have a more precarious socio-economic profile and may even exacerbate pre-existing socio-economic vulnerabilities at the individual level”, he underlines the study.

8:10 am – USA. Over 1600 dead in the last 24 hours
The United States has recorded 1,635 deaths caused by Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to more than 75,000 since the epidemic began.
A further 29,079 new cases of covid-19 have been identified in the past 24 hours, while about 200,000 people have been declared cured.
The United States continues to be the country hardest hit by Covid-19, both in terms of the number of deaths and the number of diagnosed cases. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 1.28 million cases have been declared in North American territory alone.
The situation in Portugal
In Portugal, 1,114 people died of the 27,268 confirmed as infected, and there are 2,422 recovered cases, according to the latest daily bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health on the pandemic.
The country has been in a calamity situation since Sunday due to the Covid-19 pandemic, after 45 days in a state of emergency, which ran from March 19 to May 2. The new context allowed the reopening of some spaces and economic activity.
In economic terms, the IMF predicts a recession in Portugal of 8% and an unemployment rate of 13.9% in 2020.
Brussels, on the other hand, estimates a contraction of the national economy of 6.8%, less serious than the European average, but projects a recovery in 2021 of 5.8% of GDP, below the EU average (6.1%) and the euro area (6.3%).

The international framework
The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 272,000 deaths and infected almost 3.8 million people in 195 countries and territories in recent months.
Since the disease was first detected in China, and then in the rest of the world, governments in several countries have called for confinement and sent home more than half of the world’s population, also ending non-essential trade. Air traffic has also been drastically reduced and the world economy has entire sectors completely paralyzed.
In view of the reduction of contagions and patients in intensive care, but also the economic difficulties, in the last few weeks, several countries have tried to deflect, with plans to reduce the restriction measures.
