It is encouraging news, given by the American pharmaceutical company Pfizer and the German company BioNTech. Both announced this Wednesday that they had obtained positive results in the first tests carried out with the vaccine against the coronavirus that they are developing.
The tests included 45 adults between the ages of 18 and 55 and different doses of the vaccine were tested. According to the companies, the results reveal in individuals an antibody production higher than that which has been detected in patients who recovered from covid-19.
The vaccine, according to the advanced information, was generally well tolerated, with no significant adverse reactions recorded. Only, in some cases, fever and pain at the injection site.
The work is being carried out with the utmost urgency, reinforce the companies, which now used the data obtained to carry out a much larger test, involving up to 30,000 participants. If everything goes as planned and the regulatory authorities approve, production will start in late July.
After these first positive signs and if the new test confirms them, leading to the approval of the vaccine, the intention is to manufacture up to 100 million doses by the end of the year and potentially more than 1.2 billion in 2021.
Generally, it is necessary to wait at least 12 to 18 months for a vaccine to be available for use in the population, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In this case, the expectation is that the process will be accelerated.
