Covid-19: Italy adds almost 1,300 new infections, UK sets daily record since May – News

Italy

The country has registered 1,297 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus and eight fatalities associated with the covid-19 disease in the last 24 hours, the Italian Ministry of Health reported today.

In total terms, and since the beginning of the covid-19 disease crisis in the country, on February 21, Italy accounts for 277,634 cases of people who became infected with the new coronavirus.

Although the number of new infections has decreased (minus 400) from data released on Saturday (when 1,695 new cases were announced), Italian authorities also admit that fewer diagnostic tests have been carried out.

Today, 76,800 tests were counted, 30,800 less compared to 107,600 indicated in Saturday’s official data.

With the count of eight new fatalities associated with covid-19, the total number of deaths recorded in the country since February rises to 35,542.

According to data from the Italian Ministry of Health, 405 patients were reported to have recovered in the last 24 hours, with the country totaling 210,015 patients who managed to overcome infection with the new coronavirus.

In terms of the positive cases that are currently active in Italy, the authorities point to 32,078, of which more than 8,000 are diagnosed in Lombardy (north), the region of the country most affected by the current pandemic.

Among the active cases of infection, the vast majority (about 30 thousand) are patients who are in their respective homes with mild symptoms of the disease.

Inpatients are currently 1,683, including 133 in intensive care units.

Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said today that Italy hopes to have the first vaccines before the end of the year and that the first doses, between two and three million, will be aimed at health professionals and older people with pre-diseases , particularly those found in homes and senior homes.

In an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, the minister also defended the need to start the school year in safe conditions in the coming weeks, recognizing, however, that “autumn will not be easy”.

UK

The UK has registered 2,988 new infections with the new coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the highest daily number of new cases since May 23, British officials said today.

With these new diagnoses, which represent an increase compared to the number of new cases released on Saturday (1,813), the country totals 347,152 people infected to date with the new coronavirus.

As in other European countries, the United Kingdom is also witnessing an increase in the number of infected people as society reopens after confinement.

Part of this growth in cases can also be explained by the increase in tests carried out in the country, which are identifying people who have mild symptoms or who are asymptomatic.

This increase also occurs at a time when British students are returning to classrooms.
The official data today provided by the British authorities also indicate the registration of two deaths related to the covid-19 disease in the last 24 hours.

In total terms, the UK accounts for 41,551 deaths from covid-19, the highest number in Europe.
