Covid-19 has significantly changed the shopping habits of 60 percent of the population

About 60% of the population admitted that the prevalence of Covid-19 has significantly changed their shopping habits, forcing them to reconsider both the choice of store formats and frequency of visits and the list of products to buy, according to the latest industry survey “Maxima Retail Compass”.

Almost 45% of the population have tried to visit stores less often, while the number of people who shop in e-shops has almost tripled from 3.5% to 9% in the last six months. Also, a significant number of buyers (13%) continue to regularly replenish stocks with products with a long shelf life.

Compared to the activity of the population in the spring of this year (0.7%), home delivery of ready meals has increased by up to 4% this autumn, while every tenth or 11% of respondents have started to buy disinfectants in the autumn, while in March it was less than 6%. .

“The situation is largely influenced by the financial situation of the population. Respondents’ self-assessment shows that about a third or 30% of income has decreased in the last 12 months, which is the most significant decline in the last three years, ”explains Jelena Popjonoka, Director of the Business Analytics Department at Maxima Latvija.

Given the decline in income, the majority of respondents (around 60%) will plan their expenses more carefully, not only buying large purchases in the next year (51%), but also spending less on everyday goods (44%), because they are not sure about the economic situation and their income.
