Addressing the organisation’s board, WHO Emergency Relief Coordinator Mike Ryan pointed out that outbreaks of the new coronavirus were taking place in south-east Asia and that the number of illnesses and deaths was rising in parts of the eastern Euro-Mediterranean region.

Current WHO estimates suggest that 10% of the world’s population may be infected with the new coronavir, Ryan said, stressing that the vast majority of the world’s population is still at risk.

“We are now entering a difficult period. The disease continues to spread,” Ryan said.

More than 35 million people have been confirmed with the new coronavirus worldwide, but the WHO estimates that there may be around 800 million people actually infected.

Experts have long pointed out that the actual number of cases is likely to be many times higher than officially registered.
