The Prime Minister considered this Wednesday that the country cannot stand a new period of confinement because of the covid-19 and warned that the time is “very short” for society to prepare for next winter.
This warning was left by António Costa in the speech that ended the presentation of the Simplex 20-21 program, at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento, in Parque das Nações, in Lisbon, during a session attended by ten ministers from the current Government.
“There is one thing we know: We cannot repeat the confinement we had to impose during the period of the state of emergency and in the following weeks, because society, families and people will not be able to bear to go through it again”, declared António Coast.
Facing a second wave of the covid-19 pandemic, the executive leader said that the work of adapting society “must be done now, because there is still some time away to avoid the worst” next fall and winter.
“Time is extremely short, maybe we can’t do everything, but we really have to roll up our sleeves and do our best to ensure the continuity of the functioning of society, namely schools, companies and public administration services, even in a condition as or more adverse as the one we experienced in March. We have to accelerate this process “, reinforced António Costa.
António Costa stressed that science does not guarantee that next autumn or winter there will be no “as difficult or as difficult moments as those that were experienced in early March in terms of the covid-19 pandemic”.
“Nothing telling us science, we only know that our intuition tells us that in winter there is usually less immunity. It is not by chance that in winter there are more patients than in summer, there are more flu than in summer. We must wish the best , but we have to prepare for the worst with what we already know today “, he insisted.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that society, in general, is now more disciplined, with “masks, disinfectant gel, respiratory label or physical distance”.
“All services and companies are better organized to ensure these conditions. We have to use the European resources available, we have to accelerate and raise the ambition of what we can and should do. This is another time trial that is running and that we cannot lose, “he added.
