JAKARTA – Disease Covid-19 more at risk for people who previously contracted the disease (in medical terms it is called Comorbid). Some time ago, a report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that 94 percent of cases of Covid-19 deaths in the United States occurred in patients with comorbidities or had comorbidities.

Internal Medicine Specialist, Primaya Hospital Bekasi Utara, dr. Kathi Swaputri Kancana, SpPD said that patients who have Comorbid need more attention because their condition is more vulnerable so that when they contract Covid-19 it can have fatal consequences. The list of the Ministry of Health contains 12 comorbidities Covid-19most of the patients were positive Covid. Five of them are hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, lung disease, and kidney disease. “People who already have this disease must strictly implement health protocols to avoid transmission of Covid-19,” said Dr. Kathi.

According to a research report in the European Heart Journal, people with hypertension are twice as likely to die from Covid-19. In Indonesia, this disease ranks first as a companion disease of Covid-19.

Hypertension is a high blood pressure disease that can cause various complications. There are many causes of high blood pressure, including age, being overweight, not exercising enough, and consuming excess salt. (Also read: Independent Campus Prepares Students to Face Global Challenges)

Without treatment, high blood pressure can over a period of time cause damage to internal organs, including the heart and kidneys. Therefore, people who have hypertension are very at risk of developing a more severe condition when exposed Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Association of Endocrinologists called diabetes mellitus as a covid-19 comorbid that increases the risk of severity in positive patients. The reason is that there are fluctuations in blood sugar levels in people with diabetes and is associated with blood viscosity due to unstable blood sugar.

Diabetes mellitus is a degenerative disease that requires intensive control and treatment. The triggers of this disease include an unhealthy lifestyle, heredity, and age. (See video: DKI Jakarta Regional Government Plans to Extend Transitional PSBB)

People with diabetes mellitus need to pay more attention to their treatment in addition to implementing health protocols. In various parts of the world, this disease occupies the top five list of comorbidities Covid-19 which is dangerous. (Faith Firmansyah)
