Covid-19: are you diabetic? – The Republic of the Pyrenees.fr

Barrier gestures and healthy living

Telemedicine ensures “normalization of the glycemic balance as in normal times,” said the High Authority for Health (HAS).

For their part, patients must scrupulously respect the barrier gestures. And maintain a healthy lifestyle, essential for the stability of their state of health. As much as possible, confinement should not prevent balance on the plate, regular practice of suitable physical activity and medication adherence.

Finally, “the patient should never stop injecting slow insulin (or via an insulin pump), not change treatment without the advice of his doctor, or practice self-medication.” Like all chronic disease monitoring, it is advisable not to “delay the necessary consultations” planned within health establishments, where the channels are organized to avoid any risk of contamination.

Watch for symptoms

If you have diabetes, it is recommended that you call your doctor or endocrinologist if you experience the symptoms associated with Covid-19: fever, cough, headache, fatigue, loss of taste and smell, balance problems, difficulty breathing.

Have the same reflex if your diabetes seems to be out of balance. In which case you may experience intense thirst, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain. Ditto if you go to urinate more often, if your breath becomes fruity, if your heart gets faster or if your blood pressure drops.

Your doctor will advise you of the situations in which you must call 15. It is in particular the reflex to adopt in the event of “sores at the extremities”, details the HAS. “In children or young adults, enuresis, rapid weight loss or polyurid polydipsia syndrome (increased urine production associated with excessive thirst) can suggest primary diabetes. It is therefore necessary to react quickly and immediately initiate hospital care. “

If your referring doctor is not available, do not hesitate to dial 15 when any abnormality occurs (chest pain, syncope, dyspnea, neurological deficit). The regulation of the SAMU will take stock of the situation with you.
