Couple escapes from quarantine hotel, arrested at Schiphol

At Schiphol, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee arrested a couple who had fled the quarantine hotel in Badhoevedorp. Staying in this hotel de positively tested travelers from South Africa.

It concerns a man from Spain and a woman from Portugal. The two were arrested on a plane that was about to leave for Spain.

How the couple managed to escape is a mystery. “Various parties ensure that no one can enter or leave the hotel, including the police and the Marechaussee. It is not known how this could have happened,” a spokesperson for the Marechaussee said.

Prosecution

The two infected travelers have been transferred to the GGD. “They determine how the further quarantine will proceed. Violating quarantine obligations is a crime. We draw up an official report, it is then up to the Public Prosecution Service to determine what will happen next.”

The Marechaussee cannot say how many infected travelers from South Africa are still staying in the hotel.

At least thirteen travelers who arrived at Schiphol on two KLM flights from South Africa last Friday are infected with the omikron variant. The variant may be found in more samples. A total of 624 passengers who arrived at Schiphol from South Africa on Friday were tested for corona by the GGD, 61 of whom were positive.
