Countries have ordered millions of Sputnik vaccines. They only got a fraction

Sputnik V was the world’s first registered SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and the demand was huge. Countries around the world have ordered millions of benefits. The vaccine has a comparable effectiveness with others that are used, for example, in the Czech Republic – ie over 90 percent. In Europe, however, it has not yet been approved by the regulator.

Russia’s direct investment fund (RDIF), which is in charge of exporting vaccines, assured the region this year that Moscow was able to “deliver a vaccine to 700 million people abroad by the end of the year.” At the end of July, however, countries that ordered Sputnik and often paid already complain that they received only a fraction of the contracted vaccines.

Iran, for example, may feel deceived. According to the BBC, he ordered 60 million doses of Sputnik from the Russians, but so far he has received only about 2 million. Similarly, Guatemala has paid $ 79 million for 8 million benefits, with only 150,000 arriving to date, according to the media. Bolivia received 745,000 doses from the promised 5.2 million, she said BBC.

The trade with Mexico, announced and celebrated by both countries, is also tied with great pomp. This reached an agreement with Russia in January to deliver 24 million doses of vaccine, and has so far received 4.1 million. Argentina, still waiting for 5.5 million first and more than 13 million second benefits, is even threatening to withdraw from the contract. Deliveries of Russian vaccine to Africa have similar delays. Namely Angola and Ghana.

Delays in the supply of Russian vaccines abroad were caused not only by delays in production but also by increased domestic demand after authorities in some parts of Russia ordered compulsory vaccination against workers in contact with the public. The solution to the current situation could be pre-negotiated licensed production abroad, specifically in Iran, India and Serbia.

In addition, it should be noted that other pharmaceutical companies also had delays in contracted deliveries in the spring.
