Countries Affected by Underwater Volcano Eruptions in Tonga

KOMPAS.com – Underwater volcano in the region Tonga erupted on Saturday (15/1/2022) and caused a tsunami.

Tsunami warnings were even issued by several countries including Japan and the United States.

So far, New Zealand, a country with close ties to Tonga, has not received any reports of deaths or injuries.

Due to this tsunami, King Ronga Tupou VI was evacuated from the palace.

Communication in Tonga is currently also still cut off.

1. Japan

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for several coastal areas of the country on Sunday (1/16/2022) morning.

Iwate Prefecture saw waves as high as about 2.7 meters after the eruption.

As for a number of other areas reported a small tsunami.

However, on Sunday (16/1/2022) afternoon, all tsunami warnings had been lifted.

The Japan Meteorological Agency ruled out the possibility of further tsunamis, but only said there could be some tidal fluctuations.

The Japanese coast guard said so far no damage had been reported.

2. Fiji

Fiji also issued a warning asking people living in low-lying coastal areas to move to safety.

This is done to anticipate strong currents and dangerous waves.

Footage circulating showed people fleeing to higher ground in Suva, Fiji’s capital when huge waves hit the shore.

3. Samoa

Samoa also issued tsunami warnings for all lowland coastal districts.

This was conveyed by the Samoa Meteorological Agency.

Residents and visitors are advised to stay away from the beach area.

4. New Zealand

A tsunami warning was also issued for coastal areas on the north and east coasts of New Zealand’s North Island and the Chatham Islands.

Scientists from New Zealand’s Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Emily Lane said that the eruption that occurred in Tonga was a very significant eruption.

“Shock waves from it are clearly visible on satellite imagery and there are reports of eruptions being heard at least as far as New Zealand,” he said.

5. United States of America

The eruption of an underwater volcano in Tonga is said to have also caused waves on the US West Coast with a height of about 1 meter.

According to the San Diego National Weather Service, the highest recorded wave was in Port San Luis, California at about 1.3 meters.

The first tsunami waves were seen on the West Coast on Saturday (15/1/2022) morning.

Tsunami warnings have now been lifted, including in California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska.
