The dean of the faculty of medicine at the University of Hong Kong, epidemiologist Gabriel Liang, has suggested that the 2019-nCoV coronavirus, if humanity does not take sufficient measures to combat it, could infect 60 or even 80 percent of the world’s people. According to the expert, this follows from the fact that every person who encounters 2019-nCoV infects 2-3 others on average.

The words of Liang, referenced by The Guardian, became a comment on a recent statement by WHO Director General Tedros Adhanoma that the current situation with the epidemic of the virus is only “the tip of the iceberg”.
The publication was already commented on by Russian colleague Liang, member of the expert committee on medical research of the WHO European Bureau Vasily Vlasov. He considered the article “too alarmist” and expressed the view that in reality the virus is unlikely to infect most of humanity. Moreover, according to Vlasov, it is possible that the coronavirus will become less lethal, because “killing everyone in a row is not good for him,” the Dozhd TV channel reports.
Currently, the number of people infected with coronavirus has exceeded 43 thousand, and less than 500 cases have been recorded outside of mainland China. 2019-nCoV claimed the lives of more than a thousand people, while more than four thousand were completely cured of it.
