Coronavirus: unwelcome crowds for Bolsonaro, first day without death since March in Sweden

The pandemic of the new coronavirus has killed at least 370,261 people worldwide since its appearance in December in China, according to a report established by AFP from official sources Sunday at 19H00 GMT.

More than 6,113,340 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 196 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic, of which at least 2,520,800 are now considered cured.

This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections. Some countries only test severe cases, others use testing as a priority for tracing, and many poor countries have only limited screening capacity.

Since the count carried out the previous day at 7:00 p.m. GMT, 3,666 new deaths and 123,415 new cases have been recorded worldwide. The countries with the most new deaths are Brazil with 956 new deaths, the United States (698) and Mexico (364).

The United States, which recorded its first death linked to the coronavirus in early February, is the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 104,051 deaths for 1,778,515 cases. At least 416,461 people were declared cured.

Among the countries hardest hit, Belgium is the one that deplores the highest number of deaths compared to its population, with 82 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Spain (58), the United Kingdom (57), Italy (55), and France (44).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao), where the epidemic started at the end of December, officially counted a total of 83,001 cases (2 new between Saturday and Sunday), including 4,634 deaths (0 new), and 78,304 cures.

Since Saturday at 7:00 p.m. GMT, Rwanda has announced the first death linked to the virus on its soil.

Europe totaled Sunday at 19:00 GMT 178,080 deaths for 2,151,192 cases, the United States and Canada 111,399 deaths (1,869,442 cases), Latin America and the Caribbean 50,711 deaths (990,972 cases), Asia 16,273 deaths (542,951 cases), the Middle East 9,487 deaths (404,261 cases), Africa 4,179 deaths (145,962 cases), and Oceania 132 deaths (8,565 cases).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to corrections by authorities or late publication of data, the 24-hour increase figures may not exactly match those published the day before.

New crowds for Bolsonaro, nearly half a million cases in Brazil

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro participated in a rally on Sunday with his supporters, once again defying health standards and rules of social distancing at a time when the country is recording nearly half a million cases of the new coronavirus. The head of state, openly against the containment measures, appeared before the presidential palace in Brasilia, greeting dozens of sympathizers who chanted: “myth, myth, myth”.

While being careful not to touch the hands of his supporters this time, Mr. Bolsonaro, surrounded by his bodyguards, carried two children on his shoulders. He then rode a police horse.

Brazil, 210 million inhabitants, is the fourth country with the most deaths from the new coronavirus as of Saturday with 28,834 deaths, behind the United States (more than 103,000), the United Kingdom (38,489) and the Italy (33,414), according to a report prepared by AFP.

Chile passed Sunday the milestone of 1,000 deaths from Covid-19 and 100,000 contaminations with the new coronavirus, according to the latest official figures. In the past 24 hours, 4,830 new cases of coronavirus have been officially registered in this country of 18 million inhabitants as well as 57 additional deaths, a daily record, announced the Ministry of Health.

As of Friday, more than 80% of the contamination was concentrated in the capital of Santiago alone, which has seven million inhabitants.

Bangladesh struggles despite record 24-hour death toll

The containment of the population against the new coronavirus was lifted Sunday in Bangladesh, despite the announcement the same day of a record number of deaths and cases of contamination in the past 24 hours. Millions of people have returned to work in the densely populated cities of this South Asian country, whose economy was severely impacted by the Covid-19 crisis.

“The confinement has been lifted and we are almost returning to normal life,” said Health Ministry spokeswoman Nasima Sultana, calling on compatriots returning to their businesses to wear protective masks and observe the rules of distancing. social.

And this while Bangladesh, which has 168 million inhabitants, recorded Sunday its largest daily increase in the number of cases of contamination and deaths due to this disease, respectively 2,545 and 40.
