Coronavirus: they test a new vaccine that looks for immunity by T lymphocytes | The first results are encouraging

The first trials of a new vaccine against the coronavirus offered hopeful results. According to the information published in Magazine Nature, it is a formula that points to the T cell immunity, unlike existing vaccines to date that elicit immunity through antibodies.

Phase 1 trials of this new vaccine, called CoVac-1, were carried out in Germany and involved 36 people aged 18 to 80 years, who received a single dose.

CoVac-1, the researchers explained, aims to elicit long-lasting immunity against SARS-CoV2 through T lymphocytes, white blood cells responsible for the second stage of the immune response, cellular immunity, which completes that of antibodies through the direct attack on infected cells and not only against viruses that circulate in the body.

With this formula, It would seek to reproduce as far as possible the immunity acquired through a natural infection. It is an “important response for the control of viruses and could be used for immunocompromised people,” the Nature article highlighted in this regard.

What’s more, T cells can facilitate “the production of protective antibodies by B cells”, that they are another type of white blood cells, celebrated the specialized magazine.

Results

All participants showed a “specific” reaction to SARS-CoV2 using T lymphocytes “28 days after the vaccine, a reaction that persisted for at least 3 months,” the study says.

This response exceeded that caused by natural coronavirus infection and it was not “altered” by any current variant (alpha, beta, gamma, and delta).

The results, however, are very embryonic, so it will be necessary to wait for larger trials to confirm the real interest of this vaccine to protect against covid-19.
