“In absolute terms, the numbers we read every day tell us little about the trend of the epidemic if we do not associate them with other variables, such as the number of tampons,” says Taliani. “We can use them for deterrence, communicating that the virus is still present and continues to cause more or less manifest infections, thus soliciting the use of the mask, distancing and generally responsible behavior”, says the professor.
“Stable clinical picture”
Of the growth detected in recent days – with the new infections that for the first time in some time have returned to above 1,000 – Taliani clarifies that we do not know on what types of subjects they are performed. “It is clear that if the swabs are about contacts of positive people – which is what should happen – then the numbers are not surprising. If instead they are made on a population chosen randomly on subjects who do not have a history of exposure, or risk behaviors, then they can be alarming ».

At the same time, they require us to be cautious and attentive to both our own behaviors and those of the people we interact with. The communication of data must have the purpose of keeping attention high. The virus is circulating, but we must not create extreme alarmism ».

For Taliani it is not even “conceivable” a second wave on the level of the first: “We could never have a circulation of the virus as silent as the one that occurred at the beginning of the year. Such a pattern cannot be repeated. It’s out of the question”. But the prerequisite – he adds – to be sure that this does not happen is “to maintain a high capacity for control and surveillance” and to appeal to individual responsibility.
