“Coronavirus: should we be afraid for dogs and cats?” : advice from the vet

In our “Free stands” section of this Saturday, February 8, veterinarian Sylvain Ranson answers the following question: “China is starting to protect pets with masks from the coronavirus … Are our dogs and cats at risk?” .

China is engaged in a great battle against coronavirus 2019-nCov. Chinese pets are not immune to protection measures. 2019-nCov is an emerging virus: it comes from the mutation of an existing virus in animals.

Transmission to animals has not been demonstrated

This transformation allows it to cross the interspecies barrier, and to contaminate humans. It was therefore logical that China wondered about the possibility of reservoirs or vectors in pets. At this time, transmission of 2019-nCov to animals has not been identified.

During the SARS crisis in 2003, the virus implicated was also an emerging coronavirus, but no case had been identified. There is no 2019-nCov epidemic in France. Cases have been imported and processed. You can therefore be reassured. If the situation were to become complicated in France, the veterinary profession would inform the owners.
