Coronavirus, Ricciardi: “The situation could get worse in the next two weeks”

For the advisor to the Minister of Health, the arrival of colds and flu could increase the pressure on hospitals. Excluding a new total lockdown

For Walter Ricciardi, full professor of Hygiene at the Catholic University and advisor to the Minister of Health Roberto Speranza, Italy, unlike France, will not need a new lockdown total. However, during an interview with the press, the expert explained that everything will depend on the behavior of the Italians and that Lazio and Campania are at risk. “It takes two weeks to be sure, but the first impression is positive. It was important to bring ten million people back to normal, but it must be ensured over time, ”he said. “All cities and regions are shared equally. In the spring Lombardy and Piedmont were the most affected areas, while now they are Lazio, Campania and Sardinia ”.

France is in a difficult situation and could soon reach a total lockdown. It must be borne in mind that the actual infected are about five times those ascertained, but it is not so much the number that matters as how much this affects the health system. In France the intensive therapies in Marseille and Nice are starting to move patients to Paris and this with the growing contagions can only lead to the lockdown ”, explained Ricciardi. Speaking of the Italian situation, the expert stated that he believes a general lockdown is unlikely, but also assuming that everything will depend on the behavior of the Italians. “If we are good we will not need it, even if in some areas we are losing control, as in Lazio or Campania”.

The differences between Italy and other countries

Ricciardi stressed that between Italy and other European countries there are differences in the management of the coronavirus emergency. In France, for example, there is no mandatory quarantine, while in England restaurant staff have only recently started wearing masks. The expert added that in some countries, such as Spain, Israel, Belgium, Holland and Denmark, the situation is worsening and at the moment there is no common strategy to deal with the emergency. “The only option is to limit people’s movements to and from the compromised states,” Ricciardi explained. The doctor called “probable” a possible worsening of the situation in Italy in the coming weeks, also linked to the arrival of colds and flu, which could increase the pressure on hospitals. “This is why the precautionary reminder and the flu shot for all ages are important. The Immuni app should also be resumed, which allows for more timely digitized tracking than manual ”, concluded Ricciardi.
