The number is now at 0.99. This means that the number of infections remains almost the same, or decreases very slowly. The further it gets below 1, the fewer people will contract the virus.

A reproduction number of 0.99 means that a hundred people with corona infect an average of 99 others. They transmit the virus to about 98 people, who then infect about 97 others. With each step, the number of new carriers decreases slightly. If that continues long enough, an epidemic would eventually die out.
