Coronavirus reaches South Africa: ‘If we do nothing, we will be flooded’

The corona virus is also increasingly spreading in Africa. But simple measures that people can take, such as washing your hands, are a luxury in many countries.

The corona outbreak started relatively slowly on the continent. First there were a number of corona cases over the Sahara, in Egypt and Algeria, then an infected Italian came to Nigeria. Meanwhile, the virus has progressed further south and has already appeared in more than thirty countries.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros, who himself is from Ethiopia, called on “his” continent to wake up this week.

240 infections

Although the number of confirmed infections is still low in many countries, the fear is that the virus will spread quickly. Captain is now South Africa. The counter there is now at 240 infections; Friday there were 202 and Thursday 150. There is also a backlog when it comes to testing.

The fact that the virus took longer to emerge in Africa is mainly because it had to be brought there first. The list of infected persons in South Africa includes a 33-year-old man who has been in France, a 43-year-old woman who was in Austria and a 23-year-old man who traveled to Germany. But in the meantime, there are also infections in South Africa that the authorities cannot trace back to travelers or tourists.
