New York City Hall launches phase 1 of deconfinement

  • New York is finally on its way back to normal! Since March 22, 2020, with the rise of the coronavirus epidemic in New York, the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, had ordered the city to be “put on hold”. The term “containment” had not been used but, in fact, it closely resembled the containment put in place in Europe. Schools, museums, monuments, places of entertainment, shops and restaurants were to remain closed and New Yorkers were called to stay at home as much as possible.
  • It will all be a thing of the past! Almost 3 months later, the health situation has greatly improved. Main figure posted by the town hall: the number of new hospitalizations has now fallen below the threshold of 2 per 100,000 inhabitants.

What does phase 1 of deconfinement consist of?

  • As of June 8, 2020, more than 400,000 New Yorkers are now allowed to go to work. These are employees working in the construction, clothing, agriculture and distribution sectors.
  • In detail, here are the businesses authorized to reopen: supermarkets, clothing stores, shoe stores, florists, electronics stores, furniture stores, jewelry stores, stores selling luggage, stores of sporting goods, garden centers, beauty stores, gift stores, discount stores, bookstores, musical instrument stores, and specialty DIY, office supplies and hobby stores.
  • As in Europe, this first phase of deconfinement is carried out with the greatest caution and the New York authorities are increasing the measures to avoid a resumption of the epidemic.
  • Thus, store staff and customers will be required to wear a mask at all times. The boxes must be separated from the customers by plexiglass panels. The number of customers will be limited depending on the size of the store. And, to enter a store, customers will have to wait their turn, spaced 6 feet apart, or approximately 2 meters. Note that the Governor of the State of New York, Andrew Cuomo, signed an executive order that allows stores to prohibit access to any customer who does not wear a mask.

When will phase 2 of deconfinement in New York take place?

  • Depending on the success of phase 1, New York City Hall will announce the transition to phase 2 of deconfinement during the month of July. Phase 2 will reopen hair salons and gyms. Phase 2 will also mark the gradual reopening of restaurants, which will only be authorized to serve on the terrace.
  • The kickoff of the first phase in any case brings a little sunshine to this month of June which begins. New York is back!
