Coronavirus: more than 10 million cases worldwide, 20,000 infections in one day in India

Over 10 million cases detected worldwide.

More than 10 million cases of the new coronavirus have been officially recorded worldwide, including more than half in Europe and the United States, according to a count made by AFP from official sources on Sunday at 9:30 GMT.

At least 10,003,942 cases, including 498,779 deaths, have been recorded, especially in Europe, the continent most affected with 2,637,546 cases including 195,975 deaths, and in the United States (2,510,323 cases including 125,539 deaths). The pace of the pandemic continues to accelerate worldwide, with one million new cases detected in just six days.

The number of infections only reflects part of the actual number of cases, with many countries using the tests only for tracing or not having sufficient resources to carry out large-scale screening campaigns.

India reports nearly 20,000 infections in one day

India reported on Sunday 19,906 cases of contamination with the new coronavirus while several states have intensified tests to contain the virus. The total number of infections is 528,859 for the whole country, which also records 16,095 deaths. India is now among the affected countries in the world after the United States, Brazil and Russia.

A total of 231,095 people were tested on Saturday, Indian health officials said, more than double the number of tests carried out a month ago.

Authorities in Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh announced plans to step up testing in the coming weeks. Cities have indeed become the main centers of contamination, notably Bombay, Delhi and Chennai (formerly Madras, editor’s note.)

The number of daily contaminations continues to increase in Tokyo

Tokyo recorded a record number of new coronavirus infections for the second consecutive day since the lifting of the state of emergency in late May. The Japanese television channel NHK reported Sunday that 60 people had tested positive for coronavirus in one day. As of Saturday, that figure was 57, which means that the number of new infections per day has been around 50 cases for at least five days. The entertainment districts of Tokyo have been identified as a hotbed of infections (cluster, editor’s note).

The number of new daily infections was down until the end of May, but after the state of emergency was lifted on May 25, that number started to rise again in Tokyo.

The Japanese capital plans to host the Olympic Games – postponed due to the global pandemic – in the summer of 2021.

The United States has passed the 2.5 million cases of coronavirus. Over 127,000 deaths have been recorded.

The United States passed the 2.5 million new coronavirus contamination threshold on Saturday, according to Johns Hopkins University counting, while the pandemic seems out of control, particularly in the south of the country, already the most affected in the world. At 5.30 p.m. (11.30 p.m.), the United States had recorded 2,500,419 confirmed cases of contamination, according to this University of Baltimore, whose reports are authoritative.

EU postpones decision to open borders

Europeans still cannot agree on a list of countries that their level of contamination with Covid-19 would make it possible to consider as “safe”, allowing their residents to come to Europe in July, we learned on Saturday diplomatic sources in Brussels. Friday evening, the ambassadors of the countries of the EU and the Schengen area had proposed a list of fifteen states, which excludes the United States where the epidemic seems out of control, and which includes China under condition.

The Croatian EU presidency had given member states until Saturday evening to vote on it, but some asked for more time.

The European proposal sets several epidemiological criteria for a country to be on the admitted list, in particular a rate of new cases of Covid-19 close to or below 16 per 100,000 inhabitants (average in the EU) over the last 14 days. But also a tendency for stability or a decrease in new cases, as well as the measures put in place by a country to fight against the pandemic, including the practice of tests.

Wearing a mandatory mask in Iran from next week

The wearing of the mask will be made “compulsory in covered spaces where there are groupings,” said Rohani during a meeting of the National Committee to fight the pandemic broadcast on television.

The measure will take effect from next Saturday, the beginning of the week in Iran, and will have to be applied until July 22. It can be extended if necessary.

The Ministry of Health has prepared a list of places of regrouping at risk, added Mr. Rohani, without giving details on possible sanctions in case of non-compliance with the measure.

According to Deputy Minister of Health Iraj Harirchi, “services will not be provided” to those who do not wear masks in places such as “government offices and shopping malls”.

Iran, which officially registered its first cases of Covid-19 in February, has registered more than 10,000 deaths out of a total of more than 220,000 cases of infection.

The 200,000 contamination mark crossed in Pakistan

The number of cases of Covid-19 contamination has now reached 202,944 while the deaths amount to 4,118. In the past 24 hours, 4,072 new infections have been reported as well as 83 deaths, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

More than 92,000 people, or 45 pc, are considered to be cured, while 2,805 are hospitalized in critical condition.
