The Lausanne market resumed on Saturday in a new configuration, due to the coronavirus crisis. Main innovation: rue Centrale has been closed to traffic to place stands.
This reopening of the food market – since the end of April, only a few stalls had been scattered throughout the city – attracted many onlookers. And especially in the area of rue Centrale, which became pedestrian on Saturday morning to ventilate the market and allow sufficient distance between the stands.
“We had to completely redefine the public space,” explained Pierre-Antoine Hildbrand, Lausanne’s municipal economy, recalling that rue Centrale had already been closed to traffic in January on the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games. .
No clothes and flea market
In the other sectors, the 120 advertised merchants settled on the usual streets (Ale, St-Laurent, Haldimand, Pont) and places (Riponne, St-François, Palud) on Saturday. On Place de la Riponne, only food stands and florists were able to open. So, until further notice, the clothing and flea market stands are gone.
“It is important to remember that the measures related to the coronavirus do not allow a traditional arrangement of the sites and that the daily permits are no longer issued until further notice,” said the City.
The main market in the city center takes place again every Wednesday and Saturday at the usual times. With regard to the markets on boulevard de Grancy and the district of La Sallaz, their reopening is planned for next week with biweekly formats.
