Coronavirus in Novelda | A convent in quarantine after the death of a nun

Anunof the Teresian Missionary Carmelite Congregation in Novelda died yesterday from coronavirus, according to municipal sources. Since last Sunday night, the nun had been admitted to the fourth floor of isolated patients of the General University Hospital of Elda. The rest of the sisters of the religious community are twelve, they are between 45 and 97 years old, and they are quarantined under medical control, strictly following the protocol of the Ministry of Health to detect possible infections by Covid-19. At the moment, only one of them has a fever picture and another is recovering from a flu that she contracted last week.

The deceased of93 years, I was disabled -I was in a wheelchair- and I had not keptno contact with the outsidefor months. It is therefore unknown how the disease developed. The rest of the nuns have also not left the convent-asylum or made any trips outside of Novelda in recent weeks. The only displacements have been carried out in the city and have been aimed at making purchases or negotiations, as indicated by Sister Teresa Vives Pertusa, head of the center.

The deceased Teresian Carmelite began to have a fever and to feel unwell around seven-thirty in the afternoon of Sunday, March 15. The director of the convent notified the Novelda health center and the doctor on duty sent an ambulance, which transported the patient to the General University Hospital of Elda, where she was admitted at around 10:30 at night to the Emergency Department. The old woman was admitted, was isolated and had restricted visits. Finally he could not overcome the disease and yesterday afternoon the fatal outcome was known.

No contact with the school

The Teresian Missionary Carmelites of Novelda are the titular entity of the Santa María Magdalena de Novelda school, which welcomes students of Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary Education. But none of the sisters teach or maintain contact with students and teachers.

Furthermore, they also do not share the same physical space since the convent-asylum is totally separated from the center. There is, therefore, no reason to spread concern and fear-mongering among the educational community.

The mayor of Novelda, the socialist Fran Martínez, has indicated in this regard that “now more than ever we have to take extreme measurescautionand follow the recommendations ».

Among them stands out the need not to go outside unless it is out of extreme necessity. “It seemed that in general some and some had relaxed but this is very serious and it is time to fight the virus in the way that the Ministry of Health is telling us,” stresses the mayor, sending a message of calm and confidence in the measures adopted by the health authorities.

“We must follow aresponsible and supportive social behaviorin a moment of social alarm that affects us all, and where sanity and common sense must prevail. This will happen and we will spend it together ”, the mayor of Novelda has stated emphatically.

Tranquility and continuity in your daily chores

The Teresian Carmelites of Novelda are calm and carry on with their daily chores and religious life. “We are well and we do not want to generate alarm or information that do not conform to reality,” said one of the nuns.
