Coronavirus in Navarra: the vaccine arrives after Easter to high-risk patients

They are transplanted people, with cancer, in hemodialysis or with Down syndrome – Health has yet to determine their population and where they will be vaccinated

It was able to pass discreetly in a long press conference about the update of a long and complex vaccination schedule, but it was very remarkable and a great reason for joy for those interested. After Easter, Navarra will begin to vaccinate, at the same time as those over 70 years of age, the group of people at high risk of suffering a serious disease by covid-19, among which are transplanted patients, cancer patients, undergoing hemodialysis treatment or people with Down syndrome. It remains to be determined what the ultimate conditions will be, the number of the target population or where the vaccines will be administered, but the simple announcement already gives them a glimpse of the end of the road.

For them, the beginning of immunization against the disease, which will be made with Pfizer and Moderna sera, It will mean the end of a year that has been especially horrible, since their vulnerability due to diseases, pathologies or affectations that they suffer are joined by several aspects that may be invisible to the eyes of others but that pose real problems for them.

For example, in the case of cancer patients undergoing treatment, a population of around 5,000 in Navarra last year, the already hard disease is joined by factors such as the low natural protection they have, neutralized after their hard treatments. In addition, processes such as chemotherapy need consistency in the sessions to be effective, so an infection or a simple close contact that would force isolation would paralyze the cure.

The same problem also happens to transplant or hemodialysis patients (around 1,000 Navarrese are in this situation), together with the fact that their sole risk of infection – 1 in 5 people in this treatment die – justifies the vaccine, even more so when they must spend around the equivalent of two days working hours (16 hours) each week in a hospital center to receive the procedure.

Finally, it may seem that because they do not suffer from a disease, people with Down syndrome (a group of which there are no stones in Navarra) have the same risk of suffering from covid-19 as the rest. However, the syndrome can be accompanied by disorders that make it very difficult for them to obey all the health measures that must be followed. Another aspect is its active aging, which begins at a very young age.

However, despite their satisfaction, they do not forget that there are people with other pathologies who should be vaccinated. In the absence of concreteness, for now, Navarra has a pending issue with them.
