Although the last holiday bridge was the last quarantine in the Aburrá Valley that consisted of the 4-3 model (four days of opening of trade and mobility for three of closing), now the governor in charge of Antioquia, Luis Fernando Suárez, launched the proposal to have a 5-2 quarantine, with closings on Saturdays and Sundays.

The president explained that there are four reasons for this proposal, although he clarified that it will be agreed with the mayors so that it becomes a reality.

The first is that, according to him, with the beginning of the coffee harvest, especially in the municipalities of southwest Antioquia, It is estimated that there will be between 1,000 and 6,000 infected that will put pressure on the health system and hospital beds in the department.

“The second aspect is clearly evidenced by epidemiologists and by the health team that in September there is an increase in demand for health services, highly influenced by obstetric gynecology services and there is again pressure on the health system and on the beds, ”Suárez explained.

The third aspect that the president pointed out is that the health personnel will complete in September 200 days of intense work in the context of the pandemic. Finally, it is projected that there will be an ICU bed occupancy between 85% and 90% in the month of September.

In this regard, the mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero, said he will evaluate the implementation of this measure, although he specifically referred to model 4-3.

On the other hand, Braulio Espinosa, mayor of Envigado, expressed that he does not agree with this measure.

“The loss of employment and the closure of companies has caused another humanitarian crisis in Antioquia and Colombia, but the most delicate thing is to try to put the Envigadeños in total quarantine for two days, in total isolation, in their houses and with the cut off of public services by EPM and we could go to 1,100 homes with a gas cut ”, he said.

Espinosa added that if another two-day quarantine is carried out, the State must pay for the public services of the people from Envigado.

For now, a decision has not been made between the 10 municipalities of the Aburrá Valley and It continues with the measurement of the peak and double-digit schedule per day, also without quarantines.

The balance between economic openness and health care has been the debate.
